More Shade, Cooler Streets

Trees can help make hot urban neighborhoods more comfortable by shading streets and buildings and releasing moisture into the air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends vegetation as one way communities can reduce the effects of heat islands, where developed areas become warmer than nearby rural surroundings. Planting and maintaining trees can offer added benefits, too, including improved public spaces and habitat. The impact depends on local conditions, so planners often combine greenery with other heat-reduction measures.
